As part of our Hallfield Insights series, we were delighted to welcome award-winning author and spoken word artist Jaspreet Kaur for an inspiring day at Hallfield.
Jaspreet delivered an empowering evening talk for parents, “Read, Rise and Shine: How Literacy Builds Confidence and Empowers Young Minds,” sharing how storytelling and self-expression can shape confidence and identity.
In the afternoon, Jaspreet led a powerful spoken word poetry workshop for our Senior and some Prep pupils, centred around the theme “My Voice Has Power.”
Using a specially designed worksheet, pupils explored what power means to them through reflective writing, creative prompts, and personal storytelling. From brainstorming bold “power words” to freewriting about moments they felt powerful—or powerless—pupils were encouraged to dig deep and express themselves with honesty and courage. The workshop culminated in pupils crafting their own spoken word lines, including striking prompts like “I am powerful when…” and “If Power were a person…” Jaspreet also coached them on how to bring their words to life through performance, encouraging eye contact, gesture, and emotion. It was an empowering session that gave our young poets the tools—and confidence—to use their voice with impact.
Your Voice is your Superpower
Later in the day, Jaspreet also led an inspiring assembly for our Prep pupils titled “The Power of Being You.” With warmth, honesty, and energy, she encouraged pupils to embrace what makes them unique and to see difference as a strength rather than something to hide. Drawing from her own journey as a writer and spoken word artist, Jaspreet shared how her father’s advice—“The world doesn’t need another copy. It needs you.”—helped her find her voice and purpose. Pupils were captivated by her message, taking away powerful reminders such as “Your voice is your superpower,” “Being different is a strength,” and “Carry your calm with you.” It was a memorable and uplifting experience that left our young learners inspired to stand tall in who they are.
Read, Rise and Shine
The day concluded with an evening Hallfield Insights talk for parents and staff, where Jaspreet shared her own journey into poetry — from a viral open mic night performance to becoming a voice for empowerment through literature and spoken word. Her session, “Read, Rise and Shine: How Literacy Builds Confidence and Empowers Young Minds,” explored why stories matter, the impact of representation in books, and how reading for pleasure can shape a child’s path far beyond the classroom. As she reminded us, “Children who read for pleasure are likely to do better in school, not just in English, but across all subjects” (OECD, 2010).
Jaspreet also encouraged parents to use story baskets, bedtime stories and telling our own stories as grown up to our children to nurture readers and writers at home.
It was a truly memorable day — one that left every child and adult in the room inspired to find, use, and celebrate their voice.
You can also purchase Jaspreet’s book, Between the Spaces—a beautifully illustrated story that explores themes of anxiety and kindness, uncovering the hidden places of peace within a bustling city.
