Year 6

- Deputy Head Mr. Thackway

As a member of the year group at the top of the school, your child will be asked to take on various leadership responsibilities as part of his or her development. This might take the form of being a House or Sports Captain or your child might be asked to monitor the behaviour of the younger children at lunchtime. Whatever the case, our aim is to ensure your child leaves Hallfield as a rounded and responsible individual, aware of others’ needs and concerned for issues in the wider world.
Your child will continue with Study Skills as he or she prepares for the 11+ examinations.
Year 6 Extended Duties
Children in Year 6 all belong to a team which is given extended duties throughout the school. This consitsts of Five Teams of 11 or 12 with children taken from across the Year 6 forms.
• The academic year is divided into 7 week blocks.
• During each block of time, each team will perform a different set of duties and privileges.
• The emphasis will be on the children taking responsibility, and working as part of a team with children other than their usual circle of friends. This will mean covering each other if someone is unable to fulfil a duty, and policing the system themselves where possible.
• The Year 6 children will have a meeting early in Autumn Term to explain new system, and written guidelines and timetables issued. These could be incorporated into the new Planners.
These Five Teams will be as follows:
1. Eco-team – coordinating whole school paper recycling, turning lights off, closing windows, collecting litter. Paper collection needs to done on same day each week and a collection point needs to be established. If we are able to establish some gardens or raised beds they would also look after these during their block.
2. Assembly Team – preparing assemblies each day, as well as church services and Open Mornings. These children sit on benches at back of hall during the assembly.
3. Duty Team – All other duties currently undertaken by monitors i.e.:
• Upper School break – milk and biscuits queue
• Upper School break – checking in the classrooms
• early morning and lunch time registers
• dinner duty – drinks and trays
4. Pre-prep Team – to assist at Pre-prep and Kindergarten morning break times. These duties will be rotated so that four children are in the Pre-prep playground, four in KG, and four have a day off.
5. Dream Team – During this 7 week block these children will not have any duties but have the privilege of being allowed to stay in the Library Annexe at break time if they choose to. Misbehaviour will result in withdrawal of privilege without redress.
These duties will be rotated through each team during the year:
