The school was alive with excitement as hundreds of enthusiastic children and staff filled the halls and classrooms, dressed in magnificent costumes inspired by their favourite books. Pupils and parents enjoyed a delightful breakfast while losing themselves in the pages of their cherished stories.

In Pre-Prep, author Jane Swainston’s visit was a highlight, captivating each year group with her stories and inspiring them to craft their own tales. With Jane’s guidance, children learned to stretch their imaginations and create unique narratives of their own.

Meanwhile, in the Prep assembly, author Sarah Todd Taylor joined the festivities. Pupils eagerly engaged in how to write a book like Sarah’s detective series. She also took us through the journey of how we would have passed messages around the world – via a pigeon!

The children took part in many activities like the ‘character hunt competition’, the ‘National Book Token’ competition, ‘Murder Mystery Challenge’ and ‘Author workshops’.

The children had a fabulous time participating in the range of activities that were planned for them. We would like to convey our thanks to our parents for supporting the World Book Day events too and:

  • The support given to the Prep children for the half term challenge to design a Top Hat and the Pre-prep children for their ‘Design a Book Cover’ competition; we were most impressed with the creativity that was shown.
  • Your attendance at the Prep afternoon tea and share a book event as well as the  breakfast and read a book event in Pre-prep
  • Your visits to the Usborne bookfair; your support through the purchase of books raised over £1000 in commission for the school which means we can continue to update the stock of books we have in the school libraries

Benefits of reading include:

Reading to children helps build their vocabulary and improve their language skills.

3

4

Reading to children can encourage critical thinking by asking them questions about the story and characters, helping them to develop their analytical skills.

5

Reading to children can improve their concentration and focus, as they learn to pay attention to the story and follow along.

6

Reading can enhance a child's emotional development by exposing them to different emotions and helping them to develop empathy.
