16th April 2018
For the first time in a while Hallfield School sent a team of five players to represent the school in the IAPS Chess Championships at Twickenham Prep School on 12 and 13 April.
There were many schools in attendance and over 120 children competing in various categories, with 13 schools and 40 children fighting it out in The Championship section.
The weather was good, allowing the children to go outside to play football and table tennis in between matches.
The Hallfield players started the competition at a gallop with 4.5/5 points in the first round and hardly slowed down in round two and three ending the first day having lost just one game out of the 15 games played.
Although we were clearly leading the competition after day one, I was aware that there was a good chance that we could come down to earth with a bump on day two when we were due to face our sternest test. But no, our fantastic team scored 4/5 in round four, providing them with the platform they needed to coast along to victory in the final rounds.
We ended the competition not only as IAPS U11 School Champions but also as IAPS U13 School Champions!
In addition, eight-year-old Kanav Monga came equal 1st in The Championship individual competition beating a string of leading county and national players, all much older than him.
A brilliant result and well done to our players; Kanav Monga, Manvith Sandhu, Elliot White, Rohan Pal and Ozair Shah.
