From The Headmaster

16th June 2017

At last some seasonal weather has enabled the children to enjoy a full set of fixtures this week. In addition, the Year 5 children have enjoyed the best of the summer weather with their 4 day, 3 night trip to Cranedale in Yorkshire. They returned on time this evening after a very busy few days away.

Congratulations to the chess teams who enjoyed a happy and successful pilgrimage to Prestatyn in Wales last weekend. The Under 9’s A team won the event and successfully qualified for the National Primary Schools Chess Finals and a further Under 9’s team won the Plate Competition. Full details are enclosed below in a separate report but to have the Under 9’s in the National Finals on 4 & 5 July in West Bromwich and the Under 11’s in the National Finals at Uppingham on 6 & 7 July is quite an achievement and the first time in the school’s 138 year history that 2 chess teams have reached the National Finals in the same year. Chess is in “good shape” at Hallfield and a special congratulations to our chess coaches Mr Thomas, Mr Holowczak and Mr Hunt – a tremendous testament to their hard work. Good luck in the finals.

I am delighted to announce the appointment of 2 new visiting woodwind music teachers Ms Sally Harrop and Mr Sandy (Alexander) Haye, who will be joining the school this term.

Ms Harrop is a woodwind specialist and has been teaching clarinet for many years at Birmingham Conservatoire. She is an exemplar clarinettist, saxophonist  and examiner. She has a long list of talented pupils who have progressed to the music profession. We are delighted to welcome Ms Harrop to Hallfield School where she will be teaching  her specialisms of  clarinet and saxophone.

Mr Haye is currently teaching flute at KES and the Camp Hill schools and this is an instrument we would like to develop at Hallfield for boys and girls. Both musicians will be coming into assembly before the end of term to promote their instruments and Mrs German and Mrs Kestin look forward to them joining a strong music department. Good luck.

Please can I remind you to order the Gillman and Soame whole school photograph and Year 6 photograph as soon as possible to ensure that they arrive before the end of term. These are always a good keep sake and memory of your child’s time at Hallfield.

We look forward to the Year 2 extravaganza Aladdin next week and everyone will be practising for their Sports Day events w/c 26 June – see school calendar for full details.

Have a lovely weekend and enjoy the weather!
