A sunny Edgbaston greeted the players for this year’s match with West House on 12 June, which was played for the 14th year at Edgbaston Golf Club. The OHS team assembled this year was particularly strong with a complemented mix of low, medium and high handicap Golfers.
The first match out was the captain (Tim Venner) playing with Dominic Christie-Brown. Unfortunately, they were soundly beaten by the West House pairing of Mackaskill and Carter, whose stapleford score was an impressive 45 points. The next two matches changed the affairs of the day dramatically with wins for N George/R Venner and M Adams/S Venner to give OHS a 2-1 lead. Chris Griifin had to play a singles match and was narrowly pipped by John Frasier to level the match.
The next pairing of Knapp/Hale came in with a strong win to put OHS back up in the match only for J Symonds/Francis to record a narrow loss levelling the scores at 3-3. The next match would be crucial in the circumstances and a resounding win by N Davies/Bowler gave the OHS a 4-3 lead with two matches left on the course. The experienced pair of Rodgers/M Green managed to record a half to leave the score at 4 ½ – 3 ½ in the OHS favour, a lead that meant that we had retained the trophy using Ryder cup style rules as the current holders. The final match was a win for West House over Tobin/Padden.
The honours on the day were shared but the result was especially pleasing for the OHS as we have now held the trophy for 3 years in a row and have nudged ahead of West House by one win since the matches inauguration.
A fine dinner followed with the presentations of the respective silverware and prizes.
The Winners of the Cringle Cup with a magnificent 45 points were Nick Davies and Harry Bowler with Simon Venner (OHS) nearest the pin and Harry Bowler(OHS) with the longest drive.
Next year’s match will be at Edgbaston Golf Club on the 10th June 2016, if you are interested in playing please contact Celia Hooper firstname.lastname@example.org
