The Annual Golf Tournament between the Old Hallfieldian Society and West House Old Boys Association took place on Friday 9 June at Edgbaston Golf Club. The weather was kind to us and there was only a light shower half way through which failed to dampen the golfers’ spirits. Ted Rodgers bravely took on the Captaincy of the OHS team as Tim Venner was, unfortunately, unable to attend this year.
The format of lunch before the match introduced last year was repeated and enjoyed by all. The golfers were joined for lunch by Celia Hooper, Rupert Simcox, Kim Duce (former West House Headmaster), Clive Smith (Chairman of WHOBA), Jean Pratt and Peter Adams.
The Old Hallfieldians were pleased to see the return of their younger golfers. Harry Bowler (still on impressive form), Robert Hall, Allan Fatah and Cameron Fraser and although no holes in one were achieved this year they all played well. It was good to welcome two “new” Old Hallfieldian golfers Ian Burnside and Ian Partridge. Both of them thoroughly enjoyed meeting up with young and old OHs. Two stalwart OHs Tim Welch and Christian Richards also played for the first time.
The points were very close as results came in and the Old Hallfieldians were delighted to learn that, although the match was drawn 4 -4, yet again they retained the silver salver.
The Cringle Cup, awarded to the Old Hallfieldians’ best pair, was won by Mark Adams and Jeremy Payne. Henry Arnold and Ben Coward won the Michael Pratt Cup for the West House Old Boys’ best pair. The Nearest the Pin tankard was awarded to George Mitchell (OHS) and the Longest Drive tankard to Arran Khanguire (WHOBA). Michael Matthews, WHOBA Captain, presented the Silver Salver to Ted Rodgers, OHS Captain.
Congratulations go to our victorious players: Ted Rodgers (Captain), Nick Davies, Robert Hall, Peter Lugsdin, Chris Williams, Bob Hale, Harry Bowler, Allan Fatah, Mark Adams, Ian Partridge, Jeremy Payne, Ian Burnside, Cameron Fraser, George Mitchell, Tim Welch and Christian Richards.
Thanks go to OH, Peter Wall, who was our starter for the day and got all the pairs off on time and also kindly took the photographs.
Next year’s tournament will take place on Friday 9 June 2018.
