Our chess players kept busy over the weekend with tournaments on both Saturday and Sunday, and both in Coventry.
On Saturday, The Coventry Junior Chess Championship for U11 children was split into four sections depending on experience and ability. In the ‘D’ section, Umar and Diah were our big hitters both coming equal second. Umar’s younger brother Hamzah, who is in Year 2, played in his first tournament and scored more than 50% – clearly one to look out for in the future! We dominated the ‘C’ section with Kanav finishing equal second and Zach winning outright with 5/5. One of our strong county players, Felix, won the very tough ‘B’ section with 4.5/5. This section was full of serious tournament and county players so this was a great effort from Felix. In the absence of our top two players, it was up to our number three, Zain, to fight it out in the ‘A’ section and he played well to finish in second place behind the England International sensation Elis Dicen.
On Sunday, The Coventry Chess Academy Rapidplay took place. Once again Diah was in action in the Primary Section competing against children up to Year 6 and scored a strong 50%. Felix competed in the Secondary section with some children much older and finished about mid-table. Our top scorer in the Masters was our number one player Rohan who scored 50% in a field containing many strong adult county players and even an International Master. This is great preparation for the national school events which are coming up.
As always, a very big ‘well done’ to all our pupils who played magnificently!
