Music

All pupils have weekly lessons through the Upper School. Classes have regular access to new full sized keyboards, tuned and untuned percussion, recording equipment and the ICT suite. Curriculum music covers the three main areas of study; listening and appraising, composing and performing. Topics covered range from Traditional Western musical styles to Gamelan, Jazz, Blues and many more.

Over 100 individual music lessons take place in the Music Department each week. Pupils in Upper School are offered piano, violin, viola, cello, recorder, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, cornet, trombone, tenor horn, French horn, drum kit, guitar and singing.

Pupils are encouraged to make speedy progress and are then able to join our various ensembles – Chamber Choir, Orchestra, String Orchestra, Guitar Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, Clarinet and Saxophone Choir and Flute Choir.

Musicians regularly perform in assembly and many enter local music festivals. A number of have been selected for Birmingham Schools Ensembles, the CBSO Youth Choir and Birmingham Cathedral Choir.
Every pupil who has instrumental or singing lessons is invited to perform in a Year Group Concert during the Spring Term and our Ensembles play in the Summer Term. Our Carol Service, led by the Chamber Choir in St. George’s church is regarded as a major event in the music calendar.

The School acts as a centre for the ABRSM each term.

ABRSM results for the academic year 2009/2010 were 2 Distinctions, 9 Merits and 7 Passes.
